Interview Tips

Getting ready for an interview should begin at least three days before the interview is scheduled to take place. We will run down the top things you should do before the big day arrives.

  • Make sure your interview clothes are clean and pressed beforehand.
  • Make good-quality copies of your resume on nice-grade paper. Take more copies than you will possibly need.
  • Practice Makes Perfect—Dedicate one night before the interview to a mock question & answer. You can set this up with a friend or conduct the interview yourself with a list of frequently asked interview questions and a mirror.
  • Smile and body language play an important part in an interview. If you relax your shoulders and give a big old grin, you will feel more comfortable, and so will the interviewer.
  • If you feel that you just are not giving the right answers to an interviewer’s questions, try changing tactics—and ask the interviewer a few questions of your own.
  • Be sure to prepare your questions in advance and make sure they are appropriate. Some examples:
    • What is your favorite thing about working at this company?
    • Why do you think that you are best suited for this job?
  • If you feel you are lost in answering the question, maybe you misunderstood the question. Or maybe the question was not phrased clearly. That does not mean you have to struggle—just ask the interviewer for some clarification.

Closing an Interview

  • The final few minutes are crucial. You do not want to blow it by saying the wrong thing on your way out the door.
  • To leave a good impression with the interviewer, your final words and gestures should be enthusiastic and confident.
  • During the interview, pay attention not only to what the interviewer says but also to how she/he says it. Notice his/her body language, tone of voice, and level of formality. And then tailor your closing remarks accordingly.
  • But, no matter how the interviewer behaves, always be confident. Look him/her in the eye when speaking. Thank him/her by name and firmly shake his/her hand when saying goodbye.
  • Do not leave a job interview without knowing the next step in the hiring process.
  • You may also want to ask the recruiter how they would prefer you to follow up with them. Can you call them on the phone, or would he/she rather that you email them?

Remember to trust yourself and not let it get you down. Just do the best you can and try not to worry about things you cannot control.
